SUMMARY:Bridges Out of Poverty
DESCRIPTION:The Outreach Committee invites you to a free 3-hour interactive presentation titled “Bridges Out of Poverty” at Mark Street United Church on Thursday\, July 6th from 1 to 4 p.m. Our dynamic and skilled speaker is Suzie Johnson-Smith\, a 30-year Social Services employee of the City of Peterborough. \nTo decide whether you would learn much by attending\, we offer you this quiz. The full answers will be shared during the workshop. \n1. What are the 11 resources one needs to feel secure and stable in life?\n2. Can you name 10 causes of poverty and the community conditions around them?\n3. Are you able to name 10 ways in which the poor are exploited?\n4. Being wealthy is hard! What do the wealthy strive for to feel successful? Do millionaires ever actually achieve this?\n5. What is the driving force for decision-making in the middle class?\n6. Why is it that ninety percent of “old wealth” families have lost their wealth by the third generation? \nBridges out of Poverty is a framework for understanding the three classes in Canada: the poor\, the middle class\, and the wealthy and the hidden rules of each.\nWhy are the hidden rules so different?\nCome and find out why! \nThere is no admission fee to this presentation but if you wish to make a freewill donation to the Outreach Committee\, we will say thank you. Please bring your own drink and snack. \nTo register\, email karindeschamp@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Annual Fall Meeting - Celebration of Ministries
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is now closed to allow time to prepare for the meeting. Please direct any questions to Karen Wilson at kwilson@united-church.ca \nDear friends in Christ\, \nI am missing my extended church family! I greet you in the name of Christ\, the One who calls us to gather\, to celebrate and to support each other as we carry out sacred work. \nWould you like an opportunity to celebrate our shared ministry in East Central Ontario? Me too! \nPlease join us on Saturday\, October 28th at Emmanuel United Church in Odessa. Gather around the table\, at the foot of the cross\, as we recognize those among us who have made a lifelong commitment to serving and leading Christ’s church in this area. The doors will open at 9am with our meeting commencing at 10am. \nA highlight of the day will be the ordination of Morgan Bell\, ordinand from Omemee\, and recognizing the Licensed Lay Worship Leaders in our area. \nRegistration for this event closes on Monday October 23rd at 4pm to allow time for the caterer to prepare for the meeting. Details of the meeting and agenda will follow closer to the meeting. But I can tell you we will celebrate ministry of all types\, we will consider stewardship matters through budgeting and we will learn about the work of discerning currents\, our strategic planning leaders. \nBut none of this makes any sense if you are not present with us. I know some will require the help of Zoom to participate\, but there is room for all who wish to come in person. Masks are encouraged but not obligatory. \nEvents on Friday\, October 27th: Maybe you could set aside the afternoon\, Friday October 27? At 2:00pm there will be an opportunity to learn about the “Walking the Path of Peace Together” project\, a joint initiative between Faith United Church and the Kingston Indigenous community\, at 1467 Hwy 15\, Kingston. Please dress for the weather and BYO lawn chair and water. Please RSVP to Rev. Rodney Smith-Merkley by call or text at 705-313-2775. \nThere is also a Valdy concert in the evening at The Spire (Sydenham Street United Church): Canadian music legend Valdy is coming to town! It is Live Wire Music Series honour to present this beloved musician once again. Numerous Juno Awards\, Canadian Folk Music Awards and even an appointment to the Order of Canada\, Valdy has accomplished it all in his storied career. Opening the concert will be Gatineau’s Mia Kelly\, a very exciting new singer from Gatineau. Live Wire returns to The Spire for this concert\, a wonderful venue to present a Canadian music icon and a Canadian star in the making. Friday\, Oct. 27th at 7:30 pm at The Spire\, 82 Sydenham St. Kingston. Tickets: $25 in advance and $30 at the door (if available) at Brian’s Record Option and online at www.livewiremusicseries.ca \nI can’t wait to see you all! For now\, may the risen Christ bless you with good health\, abundant life and community. \nRev Wanda Stride\nSpeaker\, 2023-2024 assembly of elders

SUMMARY:Flourishing Congregational Workshop - November 10th
DESCRIPTION:Event Title: Flourishing KINGSTON\nDate: Friday\, November 10th\nTime: 9am to 4pm (in person)\nWhere:\nCrossroads United Church\n690 Sir John A. MacDonald Blvd\nKingston ON\, K7M 1A2\nTel: 613.542.9305 \nSummary: Spend a day with the Moderator\, engaging in reflection and energizing activities towards dream-oriented actions for our churches and communities. \nAll around the world – from universities to the United Nations\, from corporations to community organizations – people are talking about flourishing. Rooted in belonging\, flourishing means living with purpose and joy\, and bringing bold collaborative solutions to our world’s challenges. \nThe Moderator\, the Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne\, wants to bring that conversation to The United Church of Canada. She invites us to connect to one another in hope\, with a deep conviction by a belief that\, despite all the challenges of church life in this day and age\, we can move from despair to transformation – from languishing to flourishing. \nIs your church flourishing? \n(Perhaps that’s the wrong question.) \nIs your church contributing to the flourishing of your community? \nHow might we truly be a flourishing church in the world? How might we live in deep spirituality\, bold discipleship and daring justice\, linked from coast to coast to coast in ministry that transforms us and the world around us? \nThese workshops are free. SUMMARY:Pilgrimage to El Salvador - March Break\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in joining a partnership that has blessed people across North America since the 1980s? Is the Spirit urging you to discover Christ’s work in communities that look dramatically different from your own? \nDuring March break 2024\, 30 people (26 pilgrims and 4 leaders) from the East Central Ontario Regional Council will travel to San Salvador to be guests of our global partners at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Through this week together you will learn about Salvadoran history\, perhaps help build a school\, community centre or church in rural El Salvador\, learn about peace making initiatives in a country with a violent history. In short\, your life will change. \nAre you ready for this? \nThen please consider joining us March 8-15\, 2024\, but before you complete this application\, please consider some important\, practical facts: \n\nEl Salvador has a tropical climate\, with especially high levels of pollution in the urban areas\nMuch of the terrain is volcanic and very steep. We will walk a fair bit on this trip.\nWe sleep in dorm rooms with 8 to 10 people.\n\n  \nWhile our hosts are well connected and make our safety and health their priority\, it is important to understand the political situation in El Salvador: \n\nEl Salvador remains under a state of “Special Emergency”\, whereby some legal rights remain suspended.\nThis has resulted in mass incarceration\, which many believe has reduced the activities of the gangs and significantly reduced the murder rate.\nHowever\, there are reports of false arrests and difficulty extracting young men from prison once arrested\, including citizens of other South and Central American countries.\n\n  \nFor more information\, which includes an information session in September\, please view our POSTER \nPlease fill out the application below if you are interested in joining us!

SUMMARY:Wild Church Leadership Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This is a retreat is for anyone wanting to learn more about leading wild church services. We especially encourage anyone who will lead or hopes to lead a wild church service in Algonquin Park in the summer to attend. \nIn Wild Church\, also known as Forest Church\, we attune ourselves to the Sacred through the earth and her creatures. The more-than-human world is part of the gathered congregation. \nWe gather to listen deeply\, explore creatively\, and live gratefully; and to be transformed by intentional connection with the ancient and sacred rhythms of the creation of which we are a part. Together we will read and study the Book of Nature. \nThe ancients say that to know nature is to know something of God. \nLeaders of this retreat\, Marilyn and Svinda will explore\, among other things\, what it means to lead a worship service that is not simply an indoor service moved to the outdoors; how to engage with all our senses\, knowing that the gathered community includes the human and more-than-human beings in our midst; and how to lead others to do the same. We will also share some spiritual practices that can be included in a wild church service. \nFor more information and to register\, please visit Rise Above Guest House Retreats \nIf you are interested in leading worship this summer\, we are asking that you fill out an application which you can find on our website along with more information regarding deadlines and when applications will be reviewed. \nAny questions can be directed to Marilyn and Svinda by email.

SUMMARY:ECORC Media Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Whether it’s a sudden story that grabs the community’s attention or a unique initiative you’d like to promote\, understanding how the news media work will help your church convey its message effectively. Please note that this workshop will mainly focus on interactions with traditional news media\, rather than on the use of social media. Bring your questions! \nPlease join us as we are led through this workshop with LLWL member\, Nancy Payne\, on Friday\, November 15th at Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church in Brighton from 1:30-4:30.
